    Tnx for the nod Josiah

Man that’s tempting! I already have solar panels but that kit would double my capacity and give me a second charge controller. Tempting!

Nice i was thinking about buying a kit like that. But how do you use the car battery to plug stuff in? 5 stars.

Let me know if it works.

  7. #7 by JosiahsBackpack at September 25th, 2009

    anytime

Yep, not a bad little kit. Been wanting it for quite sometime. I am gonna build something similar to yours I think.

Here is what I am thinking. Get an action packer, put two marine batteries in it, the charge controller and a small inverter in it. Wire it up. Put it in the hall closet and run the line from the solar panel on the roof to the closet to keep it charged up. That is right across the hall from the bathroom “fall back location.” AND it can all be moved quickly.

Oh they work. My neighbor has one on his roof right now.Works great.

You have to get an inverter. The panels charge the battery and the inverter hooks to the battery and converts the DC power in the battery to AC so you can run normal appliances.

I mean getting it for the online price not the instore price.

    Ok, LOL

josiah don’t use car battery what you need is deep cycle
battery .you can find it at sam club for $65

  14. #14 by GoatHollow at September 25th, 2009

Find somewhere that you can vent those batteries Josiah. We wouldn’t want a little thing like a hydrogen explosion in your closet to ruin your day!!

  15. #15 by homeismn at September 25th, 2009

Do you need to vent the batteries if they are the indoor gel type?

  16. #16 by veritasfiles at September 26th, 2009

He’s right, a deep cycle battery is better, though car batteries would work. They just don’t last nearly as long as a deep cycle battery. Looking forward to any future updates you do on the solar. It’s not enough to run much more than a few compact florescent lights though, right? You’d need 4 or 5 of those to run a small window air-conditioning unit I think.

I don’t know about gel batteries, never had any. I’ve always assumed that they off gas, just like the others .

Doing a basics video now Armyranger10, should have it posted on my channel this weekend. Hope to explain how to get to the point where you can plug stuff in, and why you have to do it a certain way.

Yep Deep cycle is the way to go. Deep cycle let’s you deplete the battery power low. Most marine batteries are deep cycle. A car battery is not deep cycle and actually runs better when it is topped off all the time. Deep cycle cost about the same and are really what you need.
